The state of Uttarakhand was separated from the erstwhile state of Uttar Pradesh on 09/11/2000 Concurrently, on the same historical day, the Uttarakhand High Court was established at Nainital. The court started its functioning in the old secretariat building at Mallital, Nainital, which was a grand building built in 1900 AD. The court space is enhanced by a park in the front and the majestic Naina Peak, the highest peak in Nainital, in the background, creating a picturesque setting. Initially, five courtrooms were built, and over time, additional courtrooms were added. In 2007, a large Chief Justice Court Block and a block of lawyers’ chambers were also built.
The founding Chief Justice of the High Court was Hon’ble Mr. Justice Ashok A. Desai, who, along with Hon’ble Mr. Justice P.C. Verma, the Senior Judge, and Hon’ble Mr. Justice M.C. Jain, was transferred from the High Court of Allahabad. The court’s judicial strength, initially set at 7 judges, was increased to 9 in 2003. Eminent jurists like Hon’ble Mr. Justice S.H. Kapadia, Hon’ble Mr. Justice V.S. Sirpurkar, and Hon’ble Mr. Justice Cyriac Joseph, who served as Chief Justices in this High Court, were subsequently elevated to the esteemed Supreme Court of India.
Hon’ble Mr. Justice P.C. Verma, the Senior Judge, was transferred to the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad. Additionally, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Irshad Hussain, Hon’ble Mr. Justice M.M. Ghildiyal, and Hon’ble Mr. Justice Rajesh Tandon have since retired from their judicial duties.
